Local Fundraisers Help Police Foundation Support Gaithersburg Officers

The Gaithersburg Police Foundation held its annual fundraiser at Dogfish Head Alehouse on Tuesday.

Kentlands residents Gil Price and Ron Canova wrapped up lunch Tuesday at Dogfish Head Alehouse around 1:30 p.m., but that wasn't the only meal Price planned to eat at the Gaithersburg restaurant. He was heading back for dinner with his family, too. As president of the Gaithersburg Police Foundation, Price wanted to make sure he was contributing to the organizations annual fundraiser at the restaurant. The GPF, through a series of events such as Tuesday's at Dogfish, raises money "with the intention of supporting the Gaithersburg Police Department and the individual officers," Price said. Gaithersburg Police: Suspicious Letter Came From Fake Canadian Business

Police and Montgomery County firefighters investigated the letter at Diamond Elementary.

A letter sent to a Diamond Elementary School faculty member contained an unknown substance and came from a fake Canadian business, a Gaithersburg police spokesman said Tuesday afternoon. Police were called to the Gaithersburg school Tuesday morning to investigate the letter, which Montgomery County Public Schools officials said posed no threat to students or staff. "The letter came from—it said on the receiving end—from a business out of Canada," Gaithersburg police Officer Dan Lane said. "When we looked up the business, the business didn't exist. So right now we don't know where it came from. "Where it came from is a fake address." Diamond Elementary instituted a "shelter in place" procedure and Marquis Drive was closed for a short time …

Gaithersburg City Hall Reacts To Boston Bombing

Gaithersburg police officers were stationed at City Hall for Monday's Mayor and City Council meeting.

Two Gaithersburg police officers stationed in the hallway leading to City Hall's Council Chambers during Monday evening's Mayor and City Council meeting provided a stark reminder of the bombings at the Boston Marathon earlier in the day. "Our presence at City Hall is precautionary," Officer Dan Lane, a Gaithersburg police spokesman, told Patch. "There are no known threats or concerns." There is no other increased police presence in the city but officers "are vigilant and reminded to remain aware of their surroundings and any suspicious activities that may occur," Lane said. April 1 marks the 50th anniversary of the Gaithersburg Police Department.

April 1 marks a day for jokes, but the Gaithersburg Police Department has been all business for 50 years. On April 1, 1963, a resolution was signed by then Mayor Merton F. Duvall establishing the Gaithersburg Police Department. In the 50 years since, the department has grown from three sworn officers and one civilian clerk to 57 sworn officers and 15 civilians, according to a city news release. “Over the last half century, the department has seen many changes, including increased strength of officers, technological advancement and training, and redesigns of the police cruisers and uniforms; however, our mission has not changed," Chief Mark P. Gaithersburg Police Issue 9 Citations, 131 Warnings In Pedestrian Safety Initiative

Police were stationed at three Gaithersburg intersections promoting pedestrian safety for both walkers and drivers.

In hope of preventing another fatal incident involving a pedestrian, Gaithersburg police took to three high-risk intersections to promote pedestrian safety to walkers and drivers alike. On March 26, from 4-9 p.m., Gaithersburg officers were stationed at Clopper Road at Firstfield Road, Route 355 at Odend Hal Avenue and Great Seneca Highway at Orchard Ridge Drive, according to a news release.  The focus was on pedestrians not properly using crosswalks, drivers failing to stop at clearly marked stop lines and drivers failing to yield to pedestrians. Drivers and pedestrians observed in violation received either a citation or a pre-printed warning.  Officers issued 131 warnings and nine traffic citations to both pedestrians and drivers and …

Report: Gaithersburg Crime Rates On The Rise

Third quarter crime rates are up from 2011 in Gaithersburg, with incidents of robbery almost doubling, The Washington Examiner reported.

Early numbers show crime rates are up in the city of Gaithersburg, The Washington Examiner reported. Police data shows crime rates are up from 1,366 total crimes last year to 1,634 this year — nearly a 20 percent increase — through September, according to the report. Robberies and aggravated assaults showed the greatest increase, with robberies nearly doubling from 34 incidents between January and September 2011 to 63 between January and September this year, according to the report. Armed robberies are up to 78 from 47 in the same period.
