Photo of the Day: Kentlands Giant Hosts Grand Reopening

The Kentlands grocery store debuted its newly redesigned produce section and additional upgrades on Friday, Jan. 18.

Featuring a redesigned produce department, with an increased selection of fresh fruits and vegetables, and an expanded Grab and Go selection near a full-service deli department, the Kentlands' Giant Food celebrated its grand reopening on Friday, Jan. 18. Customers will also enjoy an increased assortment of international food items, an expanded variety of natural and organic products, and a brand new bakery offering a full array of fresh baked goods. As part of the celebration, Giant Food made a $2,500 donation to local nonprofit There is Hope Christian Church Food Pantry.

Speak Out: Grocery Store Shelves Picked Clean After Power Outages

With many area grocers forced to toss hundreds of pounds of perishable foods after Friday's storm, residents may find restocking their refrigerators a challenge.

As community members look to restock their refrigerators following four days of countywide power outages, many may find empty shelves at local grocery stores. Restaurants weren’t the only businesses forced to throw out stocks of perishable food items after Friday’s derecho storm knocked out the power to refrigerators and freezers in grocery stores across Montgomery County.  Patch saw dozens of store workers cleaning and restocking empty shelves in Safeway and Giant store locations on River and Falls roads in Potomac Monday morning. The stores were open for business, but had little in the way of frozen foods, ice, produce and other perishables. Grocery Unions Jittery Ahead of New Contract Talks with Giant and Safeway

United Food & Commercial Workers union calls for an early start to contract negotiations, but grocery chains won’t agree.

Negotiations for a new labor contract to cover thousands of grocery workers in Maryland have not even begun, but there are signs it will be a painful and perhaps disruptive process. Tom McNutt, president of Landover-based United Food & Commercial Workers Local 400, said the union is gearing up for a struggle with two of the biggest grocery chains in the area—Giant Foods and Safeway. The union has begun mobilizing shop stewards and union members at more than a 100 grocery stores in Maryland, Washington, DC, and northern Virginia, McNutt said. An educational campaign among members and the general public is in full swing, he added.
