Council In The Community: Quince Orchard Park Meeting Notes

Gaithersburg Mayor Sidney Katz, the City Council and other city officials met with the Quince Orchard Park community Tuesday night.

Gaithersburg officials joined members of the Quince Orchard Park community Tuesday night to address issues and concerns within the neighborhood in a special Council in the Communities meeting. Below are notes on a number of topics discussed by city officials and community members: Crime Summary Per Police Chief Mark P. Sroka: "As far as crime goes, this is a very safe community and we have very few crimes committed in Quince Orchard Park." Eight total crimes crimes reported in the last six month period for this community: one burglary, two forgeries, one drug complaint, four disorderly conduct calls. In 2011, that crime data is also consistent: 44 miscellaneous calls varying from parking complaints to 911 disconnect and domestic dispute …

Crash Involving School Bus, Car Shuts Down Portion of Great Seneca Highway

Collision occurred near Dawson Farm Road

Due to an accident involving a school bus and a car, the northbound lane of Great Seneca Highway has been shut down at Dawson Farm Road, Montgomery County police said. The accident occurred at 3:52 p.m. Wednesday, MCP spokeswoman Blanca King told Patch. Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Service spokesman Scott Grahm said he had not received reports of serious injuries related to the incident. There was no information on whether there were students on the bus.

UPDATED: Pedestrian Hit by Car on Muddy Branch Road Dies

A Gaithersburg woman who was struck by a vehicle on Muddy Branch Road near Suffield Drive has died, police said.

(Update, 9:03 a.m.) A Gaithersburg woman who was struck by a vehicle on Muddy Branch Road near Suffield Drive has died, police said. Yessenia M. Martinez Rivas, 37, of the 100 block of Lamont Lane, was taken to Shady Grove Hospital and then flown to Medstar after being hit by a vehicle that was traveling northbound on Muddy Branch Road on Monday about 5:30 p.m., police said. She died about 11:15 p.m., according to police. Police identified the driver as Daniel Ray Levine, 66, of the 14400 block of Kings Grant Street in North Potomac. Levine remained at the scene and provided information to investigators, police said. A preliminary investigation revealed that a gray 2006 Toyota Prius was traveling northbound on Muddy Branch Road and struck …

SHA: No Plans To Change Great Seneca Speed Limit

Four serious accidents, including three fatals, have occurred along Great Seneca Highway in 2012.

The Maryland State Highway Administration has no plans to reconsider the 50 mph speed limit on Great Seneca Highway (Route 119) following the road's third fatal accident of 2012, SHA spokesperson David Buck told Patch. A 69-year-old Gaithersburg woman was killed Sunday evening in a car crash on Great Seneca Highway at Lakelands Drive in the Kentlands area of Gaithersburg. Less than two weeks earlier, a 24-year-old Germantown man was killed after a collision at the intersection of Great Seneca Highway and Longdraft Road. The SHA will review the operations at those intersections after the final fatal crash report is submitted by police, Buck said. UPDATED: One Dead In Kentlands Area Car Crash

A woman was killed Sunday evening in a car crash on Great Seneca Highway at Lakelands Drive in the Kentlands area of Gaithersburg, according to Montgomery County police.

Update: (11:28 a.m.): Montgomery County police have identified 69-year-old Elizabeth Colvin Colton, of the 200 block of Hart Road in Gaithersburg, as the woman killed in a two-car collision Sunday evening in the Kentlands area. Colton was a passenger in a 1999 black Lexus LS 400 driven by 77-year-old Seymour Baden, of the same address, police said. Baden remains in critical condition. Preliminary investigation has revealed that Baden was traveling north on Great Seneca Highway and attempted to make a left turn onto Lakelands Drive when his vehicle was struck by a 2003 Toyota Highlander traveling south on Great Seneca. UPDATE: 24-Year-Old Germantown Motorcyclist Killed on Great Seneca Highway

A 24-year-old Germantown man was killed Monday after a collision at the intersection of Great Seneca Highway and Longdraft Road.

Update (9:35 p.m.): A 24-year-old Germantown man was killed Monday after his motorcycle collided with the side door of a vehicle trying to make a left turn on to Great Seneca Highway from Longdraft Road, Montgomery County police said. The victim, Michael George Balcom, of the 13200 block of Wonderland Way, was traveling on northbound Great Seneca Highway on his 2001 Suzuki SV650s motorcycle when a 1998 BMW 528i attempted to turn on to the road in front of Balcom, police said. The motorcycle collided with the passenger side door of the BMW, and Balcom was thrown from the motorcycle. An off duty Montgomery County police officer came upon the collision just after it occurred and, along with a citizen, rendered first aid to Balcom, police said…

Rockville Man Killed in Motorcycle Crash in Gaithersburg

Police: Saharath Rochanavichit, 41, was thrown from his motorcycle on Great Seneca Highway on Sunday night.

  A Rockville man died from injuries suffered when he was thrown from a motorcycle he was driving Sunday night on Great Seneca Highway in Gaithersburg, county police said in a news release. Saharath Rochanavichit, 41, of the 13500 block of Oriental Street in Rockville, died of his injuries at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, police said. County and Gaithersburg city police as well as county fire and rescue units responded to a report of a serious collision about 8:40 p.m. on Sunday, the release said. An investigation by county police's Collision Reconstruction Unit determined that Rochanavichit was northbound on Great Seneca Highway near High Gables Drive when, for reasons that remain unclear, the 2009 Ducati motorcycle he was driving struck…

I rarely see a motorcycle being operated safely. They are either passing over double yellow lines, speeding, traveling in packs three abreast, or weaving in and out of traffic. Sounds like you are right. "Bad driving" kills people.   more ›

Pedestrian Hit By Vehicle at Great Seneca, Kentlands Boulevard

An adult woman was struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Great Seneca Highway and Kentlands Boulevard on Jan. 23.

A woman was struck by a vehicle while legally crossing the intersection of Great Seneca Highway and Kentlands Boulevard on Jan. 23, according to a report by The Town Courier. The woman was walking through the crosswalk when the driver "was making a left-hand turn from Kentlands Boulevard onto Great Seneca Highway when the vehicle in front of the driver’s car stopped," Montgomery County police spokewoman officer Rebecca Innocenti told The Town Courier. "The driver then tried to get around the stopped vehicle and collided with the pedestrian who was legally in the crosswalk."
