Update -- 1:45 p.m., April 11, 2013 The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments approved a motion to reconsider its position on gun violence by a vote of 24-4-1. A substitute motion to ask for committee input and address how to handle potential legislative positions was approved by a vote of 26-2-1, the city of Gaithersburg announced. Council Member Cathy Drzyzgula, who voted against the original position, praised the COG for its decision. "MWCOG has a long history of sucessfully addressing difficult regional challenges such as Metro funding and governance and gang violence," Drzyzgula told Patch in an email. I urge EVERY Maryland lawmaker to vote for the Firearm Safety Act of 2013. It will prevent criminals, like the one who mugged my son, from purchasing guns. My son was held up at gunpoint when he was going to the library to complete his English paper. Fortunately he was not hurt physically. I grew up in Brooklyn New York where I was faced with gun violence and did not want this for my children. I moved to Maryland and apparently the violence has moved here as well. We can end much of this violence by keeping guns out of the hands of criminals. If …

Montgomery County residents taking part in Saturday's March on Washington to Prevent Gun Violence will see at least one familar face in the crowd: that of U.S. Rep. Christopher Van Hollen (D-Dist. 8) of Kensington, who will speak at the march, according to a statement from his office. Participants in the march will gather at 10 a.m. in front of the U.S. Capitol's reflecting pool. Montgomery County parents may rest a little easier after the county school board voted Tuesday to speed up spending to increase security at Montgomery County elementary schools. The Montgomery County Board of Education voted unanimously to request an additional $364,000 to place video intercom systems at the entrance of every county elementary school. If the Montgomery County Council approves the request, all 132 elementary campuses could receive the upgrade by July, the Washington Examiner reported. Passage by the County Council is likely.
