Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Gaithersburg

Tell us what this holiday means to you and how you will celebrate?

Monday, Jan. 21, is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. For some, the national holiday honoring the prominent civil rights activist is a time to give back and serve the community, be it through removing graffiti or picking up litter in a local park. For others, it’s an opportunity to educate themselves about King and his life's work. And for others, it’s a time to just kick back and enjoy the prolonged weekend. In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a countywide food drive to benefit Gaithersburg's Manna Food Center will be conducted at 27 Giant Food locations in Montgomery County on Saturday, Jan. 19, and Sunday, Jan. 20. Groups are encouraged to “adopt a store” for one or both days to help Manna collect food donations. Gaithersburg Nonprofits Join Work Group in County's New Fight Against Hunger

The program would take food that would otherwise be thrown away and redistributes it to people in need.

Gaithersburg-based nonprifits Nourish Now and Manna Food Center were among the regional organizations represented in a work group that will study the costs and logistics for a countywide "food recovery program."  In October, Montgomery County Councilwoman Valerie Ervin (D-Dist 5) proposed the idea, which would redistribute would-be wasted food to people in need. The concept gained momentum Tuesday when the County Council approved a work group to study costs and logistics for a food recovery program. Ervin said the idea was inspired by the work of two University of Maryland students.  Maryland's program, called the Food Recovery Network, collects unused food from events like football games and alumni parties, and redistributes the food to …

The Oct. 21 festival will spotlight the cultures of four of Montgomery County's largest immigrant populations--from China, India, El Salvador and Ethiopia.

The festival began in 2008, but lack of funding resulted in no festival in 2010. In 2011, the festival came back, featuring a health fair and projects coordinated by the Montgomery County Volunteer Center. In addition to the ethnic food, music and dance performances from years past, this year's festival will highlight the cultures of four large immigrant populations in Montgomery County. County officials joined Manna Food Center in Gaithersburg for the unveiling of three new food trucks.

Manna Food Center debuted its new trucks Wednesday evening.
