Chalk Talk: Poolesville Student is Semifinalist in Siemens Competition

Meghana Patel was among 12 students from Montgomery County Public Schools named as semifinalists or finalists.

Poolesville High School student Meghana Patel has been named a semifinalist in the Siemens Competition in math, science and technology, Montgomery County Public Schools System officials announced Thursday. Patel was among the 12 MCPS students named as regional finalists or semifinalists, school officials said. Neil Davey of Montgomery Blair High School was named a regional finalist and will compete in one of six regional events in November. Davey is the only public school student from Maryland who has been selected to compete in the regionals. Winners advance to the national finals in Washington, DC, in December, with a chance to win one of two grand prize scholarships of $100,000 each.  Held each year, the Siemens Competition highlights …

Watkins Mill-Poolesville Wins Patch Game of the Week Poll

Edges highly anticipated Quince Orchard-Sherwood matchup.

In the inaugural Patch Montgomery County Football Game of the Week Poll, a surprising upstart edged out two of the county's elite programs to be selected as the Week 1 Game of the Week Friday night.  With 46 percent of the vote, Watkins Mill-Poolesville knocked off Quince Orchard-Sherwood (26 percent) and the rest of the county to be nominated as GOTW. Quince Orchard is coming off a 13-1 season in which its only defeat came in overtime of the state championship. Cougars head coach Dave Mencarini told Patch he believes his program and Sherwood are the county's winningest over the last eight years. Instead, Patch will travel to Poolesville High School for a rematch of last year's season-opener between the Falcons and Wolverines, which …

Sixth Annual Burrito Mile Draws Tough Competitors for Leukemia Cause

Student runners defy wind advisory and race for charity on full stomachs.

For at least a dozen young runners, it was not enough to face wind gusts of nearly 40 miles per hour, stomachs laden with 23-ounce burritos, a competition fee of $15 and four fast laps on a 40-degree Saturday morning. They had to do it shirtless. The sixth annual Burrito Mile fundraiser was organized by students at Walter Johnson High School for Pennies for Patients, a program that benefits The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The event drew roughly 200 students to Tilden Middle School’s track off Old Georgetown Road on Saturday. The competitors, many of whom run track for schools throughout the area, had to add a new element to their game: burrito-scarfing techniques. Tariq Beidleman, 17, a senior at Poolesville High School, warmed up for his…

QO Combines With 3 Schools to Form Unique Hockey Team

Quince Orchard, Poolesville, Northwest, and Seneca Valley high schools combine to form the Northwest Hockey Club, a co-op team in the Maryland Scholastic Hockey League.

In most sports, they are considered rivals, but for the athletes who play hockey the sport transcends grudge matches as players without high school teams band together to form their own. Every Tuesday evening, Quince Orchard senior Reed Kaczmarek gathers his hockey equipment and travels north on I-270 to Frederick. Unlike many other Montgomery County high school sports athletes, he must drive 45 minutes to practice. Somehow, this is not the oddest part of the arrangement. Kaczmarek is the captain of the Northwest Hockey Club, a team combining students from Quince Orchard, Poolesville, Northwest, and Seneca Valley high schools to compete in the Maryland Scholastic Hockey League’s co-op division. What the MSHL used to consider provisional …
