Advocates Form Coalition To Push For Purple Line Funds

'Get Maryland Moving' is calling on the Maryland General Assembly to fund state transportation projects.

A new coalition is advocating for dollars for state transportation projects, including the planned 16-mile Purple Line light rail that would connect Bethesda with New Carrollton, The Washington Post reports. Get Maryland Moving, a coalition of groups, including the Montgomery County and Bethesda-Chevy Chase chambers of commerce, Purple Line Now, Action Committee for Transit, and the League of Women Voters of Maryland, is pushing for state legislators to make new revenue for transportation projects a top priority this legislative session, according to the group’s website. NOT SO! The D5 goes through the western Bethesda suburbs into Georgetown (not sure where it goes from there) and it is widely used by the khaki-and-polo-shirt crowd. I see plenty of people at the D5 stops every morning and evening. Similarly, the Ride-on that goes to Friendship Heights.   more ›

Without New Funding Source, Purple Line, CCT Could Be 'Put On Hold'

Montgomery County officials are blasting a state transportation funding plan that calls for re-allocating money earmarked for the two projects if lawmakers can't drum up more funds.

Members of the Montgomery County Council are urging state transportation officials against delaying funding for the Purple Line and the Corridor Cities Transitway. Lawmakers in Annapolis are struggling with ways to fund state transportation projects, including the 16-mile Purple Line light rail that would connect Bethesda with New Carrollton and the upcounty bus rapid transit route. Maryland Senate president Thomas V. Mike Miller has proposed a 3 percent gas tax that would raise about $300 million for transportation projects, Patch reported. But without a funding increase, a state transportation funding plan calls for re-allocating the money earmarked for the two projects and Baltimore’s Red Line within the Maryland Transit Administration’…

Top Maryland House Republican Calls For Purple Line Delay

“The citizens are hurting. They can’t take any more tax increases," believes Maryland House Minority Leader Anthony O'Donnell, reports the Baltimore Business Journal.

Maryland House Minority Leader Anthony O'Donnell has called for a delay in the Purple Line and Baltimore's Red Line, saying proposed tax increases to fund the light rail projects would be too costly for taxpayers, the Baltimore Business Journal reports. In Annapolis this legislative session, lawmakers are grappling with ways to fund the Purple Line, Red Line and other transportation projects.  Maryland Senate President Mike Miller has proposed a 3 percent gas tax that would raise up to $300 million for transportation, and jurisdictions would be able to tack on another 5 cents per gallon to pay for local transportation projects, Patch reported. O’Donnell, R-St. Mary’s and Calvert counties, said the Purple and Red Line projects should be put…

Purple Line Project Receives FTA Approval

The Federal Transit Administration gave the Purple Line project approval to enter the preliminary engineering phase, clearing the way for construction on the light rail to begin as early as 2015.

The Purple Line project received approval last Friday from the Federal Transit Administration to enter the preliminary engineering phase, Gov. Martin O'Malley announced last Friday. With FTA approval, plans for the Purple Line—the 16-mile light rail planned to connect Bethesda and New Carrollton with 19 station stops in-between—can become more detailed, work schedules and cost estimates can be drawn up, and environmental studies can be completed. The FTA review of the Purple Line proposal focused on the project’s projected "high daily ridership [with an average of 60,000 riders a day by 2030] and many significant benefits," as well as Maryland ’s "financial commitment and technical capacity to build and operate the project. The Purple Line is a sad joke of an investment. $2B in borrowed money to build something that few people will ride, that there is no money to maintain, that will require subsidies for the life of the project. The only way it makes sense is to give politicians like OMalley an ego boost. Why not name it the OMalley Purple Line? Bottom line: there is no ROI for this investment, either in direct $ or…   more ›

Purple Line Rail Yard Slated for Lyttonsville

Community members of Lyttonsville, in Silver Spring, are concerned about the construction of a rail yard and maintenance facility in a residential neighborhood.

Community criticism for the Purple Line continues this week, as Purple Line officials with the Maryland Transit Administration meet with residents of Lyttonsville, a historic community in Silver Spring, on Monday at 7 p.m. at the Coffield Community Center (2450 Lyttonsville Rd., second floor, Silver Spring) to discuss plans to construct a rail yard and maintenance facility in the neighborhood. "MTA presented major rail yard design changes to the community at a meeting on Sept. 13, surprising many who thought they were there to provide Lyttonsville station design preferences," wrote Susan Buchanan of the Lyttonsville Civic Association in a press release. "Instead, residents learned that the rail yard and maintenance facility had been 'super…
