Trojans blow 14-point halftime lead, fall to Northwest. Quince Orchard and Watkins Mill each dominate opponents.
The narrative is the same each week: two Gaithersburg-area high schools win big while another falls in dramatic fashion. Northwest 31-Gaithersburg 21 Paced by running back Soloman Vault's three touchdowns (two rushing, one receiving), Gaithersburg managed to build a 21-7 halftime lead over rival Northwest on Saturday afternoon, but the tide shifted in favor of the Jaguars in the second half. Quince Orchard and Watkins Mill earn decisive victories Friday while Gaithersburg falls a point short against Clarksburg.
Gaithersburg-area high school football teams wrapped up a successful week on the gridiron, winning two of three Friday night match ups. Unfortunately the lone loss came with some drama and heartbreak. Clarksburg 13-Gaithersburg 12 Trailing 13-6 in the fourth quarter, Gaithersburg High School running back Solomon Vault took off for a 52-yard touchdown run to cut the Trojan deficit to 1 point against Clarksburg. Trojan head coach Kreg Kephart elected to go for the two point conversion and a one point lead rather than attempt a game-tying extra point. Gaithersburg's pass attempt failed and the Coyotes held on for the win, Clarksburg's first since Oct. 14, 2011. Quince Orchard 46-Whitman 3 Quince Orchard got off to a fast start, paced by two …

Junior quarterback Mikey Murtaugh suffers torn ligament in his right knee against Paint Branch, The Gazette reports.
Quince Orchard's attempt to return to the Maryland 4A state championship game took a big hit Monday as an MRI revealed a torn anterior cruciate ligament in the right knee of junior starting quarterback Mikey Murtaugh, The Gazette reported. Murtaugh was injured on the Cougars' opening drive of Friday night's 34-0 win over previously unbeaten Paint Branch. The quarterback was replaced by junior Tobin Pagley, who rushed for two touchdowns and threw one more. Quince Orchard coach Dave Mencarini told Patch after the game he believed Murtaugh's injury to be serious, and Monday's procedure confirmed the worst. The Cougars are forced to move forward without Murtaugh, a player who Mencarini speculated would lead his offense. The Cougars' head coach…

Short-handed Cougars clamp down on Pathers' attack and grind out 34-0 blowout in battle of unbeaten teams.
Story by Matt Papuchis; photos by Sebastian Montes It was a night where unsung heroes needed to step up. Heading into Friday night's game, Quince Orchard was already playing without arguably its biggest offensive weapon, thanks to Tyrell Williams' injury in the season opener against Sherwood that has forced the Cougars' top running back to miss two straight starts. But when Mikey Murtaugh went down on the team's opening drive, the Cougar faithful held its collective breath as fans watched their starting quarterback being carried off the field. How would the county's most accomplished team over the last five years respond? Both reserve running back Manuel Brown and back-up quarterback Tobin Pagley rushed for two touchdowns apiece and …
Matchup of unbeaten teams edges Walter Johnson-Springbrook.
Move aside, Watkins Mill, there's a new big cat in town. Walter Johnson-Springbrook was week 3's runner up with 21 percent of the vote. The Cougars are coming off a 55-0 drubbing of Montgomery Blair in week 2 and a convincing 28-12 win over Sherwood to open the season. Paint Branch has easily handled two Rockville schools, first defeating Rockville High School 41-18, …

Junior Linebacker is among the most highly recruited Cougar athletes in school history.
It's been a busy offseason for Quince Orchard's Marcus Newby. Since last football season ended, the standout linebacker, currently a junior, has spent much of the winter and spring entertaining offers from some of the country's top college football programs — Oklahoma, Nebraska, Virginia, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, and Maryland to name a few — making him one of the most highly sought after recruits in QO history. According to Rivals.com, defending national champion Alabama and Ohio State have also shown interest. But so far, the 6-foot-1, 207-pound Newby is remaining humble and focused. And while the offers have been pouring in, Newby is not letting that detract from his main goal for his upcoming senior season at QO. "I'm just taking …
