Potomac's Delaney Takes Leadership Role on Capitol Hill

Maryland's newest member of Congress says he's ready to "get things done."

  By JEREMY BARR Capital News Service Rep. John Delaney of Potomac, Maryland’s newest member of Congress, has bolstered the state’s already outsized influence on the Hill. Delaney, who unseated 10-term Republican Congressman Roscoe Bartlett in November, was named senior whip and elected as one of three presidents of the House Democratic freshman class earlier this month. As a member of the Democratic Whip team, Delaney “will participate in weekly strategy meetings with Democratic leadership on upcoming legislation," according to a news release announcing the appointment, as well as wrangle votes on key issues. “I want to get things done. Van Hollen Re-elected Ranking Member of Budget Committee

Van Hollen was unanimously re-elected Thursday to serve as ranking member of the House Budget Committee by the House Democratic Caucus.

The U.S. House of Representatives' Democratic Caucus unanimously reelected Rep. Christopher Van Hollen (D, District 8) on Thursday to serve as ranking member of the House Budget Committee. "It has been a privilege to serve as ranking member of the Budget Committee for the last two years, and I am honored that my colleagues have reelected me to continue to serve in the 113th Congress," Van Hollen said after his reelection. The House Budget Committee is chaired by Rep. Paul Ryan (R, Wisconsin). In the 112th Congress (2011 to 2012), the committee consisted of 22 Republicans and 16 Democrats. DNC Schedule: Former President Clinton to Speak at 10 p.m.

Maryland's U.S Senator Barbara Mikulski, Rep. Steny Hoyer and Rep. Chris Van Hollen will also speak Wednesday night. View the schedule of notable speakers on opening night at the Democratic National Convention.

Day 1 of the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, NC, is in the book and Day 2 has many notable speakers, headlined by former  President Bill Clinton. Clinton is scheduled to speak during the 10-11 p.m. timeslot. Also speaking Wednesday from the Maryland is Sen. Barbara Mikulski (7-8 p.m. timeslot), Rep. Steny Hoyer (8-9 p.m. timeslot) and Rep. Reports: Van Hollen to Play Role of Rival Paul Ryan in VP Debate Prep

Rep. Chris Van Hollen of Maryland's 8th District will stand in for VP GOP candidate Ryan, according to news reports.

  Rep. Chris Van Hollen, D-MD, will play the role of GOP vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan in practice verbal sparring with Vice President Joe Biden, who will face Ryan in a televised debate before the November election, two television networks reported late Thursday. Van Hollen, who represents Maryland's 8th District, routinely confronts Ryan in exchanges on Capitol Hill where Van Hollen is the ranking member of the House Budget Committee, which Ryan chairs. The two often clash over the same issues that will likely come up in the one televised debate between Biden and Ryan, CBS News and ABC News reported.
