Pepco Reports More Than 1,300 Outages Monday Morning In Gaithersburg

Contractor digs into an underground cable, disrupting service Monday morning, a Pepco spokesman said.

More than 1,300 Pepco customers were without power Monday morning in Gaithersburg after a contractor dug into an underground cable, a Pepco spokesman told Patch. "We have a crew on site looking at the restoration [process], probably coming in about 15 minutes from now," Pepco spokesman Marcus Beal said at 12:50 p.m. Pepco received its first call about the outage at 11:28 a.m., and has fielding about 120 calls since, Beal said. "People are definitely curious about what's been going on," he said. Beal said he could not pinpoint an exact location for the disruption. The outage affected the Rio-Washingtonian Center area of Gaithersburg, according to Helen Hocknell, an employee of White House Black Market. Hocknell said the retail clothing …

Heat Brings Business Indoors At Washingtonian Center

The extreme summer heat wave keeps consumers indoors at Gaithersburg shopping center.

Effects of extreme heat were apparent at Gaithersburg's Washingtonian Center Wednesday afternoon as those who dared leave their homes to brave near-100 degree temperatures still took refuge indoors. Featuring shops, restaurants, a movie theatre and lake, Washingtonian Center is typically bustling outside with people, but Amanda Khoury of Washingtonian Paddleboat likened the center to a ghost town. "Normally there's a lot of people on the boardwalk, but it's dead here," Khoury said. One of only a few people who work outdoors, Khoury said she was trying to stay cool with a fan, umbrella and cold water. The Rockville resident even bought a water gun from the nearby Target to spray cold water and fool around with a co-worker, she said. Liz …
