MoCo Food Trucks Park It, Online

A collection of food trucks in Montgomery County organized a collective website, www.mocofoodtrucks.com.

The grown-up lunch line is just as likely to be outside, on the corner of a busy intersection as it is inside of a strip mall restaurant. (And it's been that way for years now.) And while residents and workers in places lousy with food trucks may enjoy the variety and speed of mobile food offerings, keeping up with what's available and when can be a challenge.  A new website, www.mocofoodtrucks.com, organizes about a dozen food trucks within the county and includes a comprehensive calendar of when some of the trucks will be in which area.  Here's how the organizers describe the site: "This site will tell you the three "Ws" of food trucks: Where we are, Who we are and What we serve. Our trucks operate throughout Montgomery County, MD from…

Restaurant news from around Montgomery County and adjacent Washington, DC, neighborhoods.

Get caught up with the food scene in Montgomery County and adjacent Washington, DC, neighborhoods with 1 Meat, 3 Sides. This week, a kosher dairy bakery takes center plate. One meat: The Costco that opened earlier this month at the Wheaton mall includes a kosher dairy bakery, Wheaton Patch reported. What makes Costco's bakery different from the other kosher bakeries in the area is that it is dairy, instead of pareve. Pareve baked goods, because they are prepared without dairy or meat, can then be eaten at a meal with either dairy or meat, under kosher guidelines. "Following the same rules, Costco's dairy baked goods cannot be eaten at meals with meat, but its bakery is the only place nearby where you'll be able to find a kosher …

How Important are Social Security and Medicare to Maryland's Economy?

A new report says a 3 percent cut in Social Security would take more than $300 million from the state economy.

How much do Social Security and Medicare programs affect Maryland businesses? More than you might think, according to a new report by the Main Street Alliance, a national network of small business coalitions. The report, called “Business is (Baby) Booming,” looked at how Social Security and Medicare can drive economic activity and strengthen the retirement security of small business owners across the country. The group’s efforts focused on small businesses—defined as a business with 100 or fewer employees. The report found that more than one-third of small business owners were at or near Social Security’s full benefit age of 66. The report also cited a U.S. Small Business Administration study that found business owners are “significantly…

Roy’s Place Has Served Its Final Sandwich

Landmark restaurant closes doors after 58-years.

Roy’s Place, an iconic Gaithersburg restaurant, has shuttered its doors for good.  In December, Patch reported that Roy’s Place, once home to a dizzying array of more than 200 sandwiches, was seeing its business “dying off a little bit” and would cut its hours. "Roy’s was obviously one of Olde Towne’s signature establishments," Gaithersburg Economic Development Director Tom Lonergan said. "While understanding that few things last forever, it’s always sad when a place like Roy’s closes its doors for good." First opened in Rockville in 1955, Roy’s Place moved to its Diamond Avenue location in Gaithersburg, and quickly became a local legend for offering some of the most unusual concoctions to ever be served between two pieces of bread. “I …

I grew up going to Roy's Place Too in Columbia. Of course, that has been closed for some time. So, we made the trek regularly from Baltimore to Roys in Gaithersburg. There was no place like it, and I already miss it. Oh how I'd love to be in Nancy's Fancy! Definitely a stitch in time. If someone reopened it, i'd give it a try.   more ›

One meat: The popular Scion Restaurant in Dupont Circle, DC, will open a second location this spring at 1200 East-West Highway in downtown Silver Spring.  "Scion will be quite similar to what we have in Dupont as far as the menu is concerned," owner Joanne Liu told Silver Spring Patch. It'll be brunch, lunch and dinner with a focus on American craft beers—at least 12 on tap and lots of bottles, Liu added. Liu said that Silver Spring was the perfect place to expand and that she's sure her food, which she describes as…
