A longtime Gaithersburg baseball coach was honored for his work Monday evening as the 2013 Middle Atlantic Recreation and Sports Alliance “Good Sports” Award recipient. Marc Berk began his tenure with the Gaithersburg in 1994 with the tee-ball program and has continued coaching through 2013, according to the city. In 1997, Marc and his wife, Helene, created the Sam and Claire Rosen Fund in honor of his grandparents and their passion for baseball, according to the city. This fund has afforded deserving Gaithersburg youth the opportunity to participate in the City's baseball/softball program.   Passing on the Yankees It's not often the New York Yankees come calling, but that's exactly what happened when the Bronx Bombers selected Gaithersburg native Jimmy Reed in the 21st round of the 2012 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. First Lady Hosts Watkins Mill Students for Jackie Robinson Film Workshop

Batter Up: Big Train Baseball Roster Announced

Baseball season has officially arrived with Monday's opening day for the Washington Nationals. Though the collegiate season is still a few weeks off, local baseball fans are gearing up for the season by checking out the recently-released Big Train roster. The summer collegiate baseball team plays in the Cal Ripken League, with teams from Rockville, Silver Spring-Takoma Park, Baltimore, Washington, DC, and Virginia. Players hail from colleges across the country and stay with host families during the summer in the Bethesda and Potomac areas. Rockville Express had not yet posted its 2013 roster at its website, RockvilleExpress.org. The Big Train plays Rockville Express on June 20 at Shirley Povich Field. Skate Park To Open Next Friday With Free Admission For 2013

The City of Gaithersburg Skate Park will open for the 2013 season at 3 p.m. on Friday, March 22, 2013.

Skaterboarders, inline skaters, BMX bikers take note: Gaithersburg's skate park is re-opening next week and it won't cost anything to get in. Located behind the Activity Center at Bohrer Park, the Skate Park opens Friday, March 22 at 3 p.m., the city announced. Regular hours are 3 p.m. to sunset Monday through Friday and noon to sunset on weekends. The 2013 season will be free for all visitors. Previously, daily admission cost $3 for city residents, $5 for non-residents, a spokesperson for the city said. Extended hours will be in place during spring break, March 22 through April 2, when the park will open daily at noon. Skateboarders and inline skaters are welcome during all sessions. Local Soccer Team Earns Fourth at Youth Tournament in Peru

Alianza Lima de Maryland Soccer Team was the only one from the U.S. to compete in the tournament.

Members of the Alianza Lima de Maryland Soccer Team recently traveled to Lima, Peru, to compete in the prestigious South American youth soccer tournament, the Copa de la Amistad, a Montgomery County spokeswoman said. The team was recognized with certificates presented by County Executive Isiah Leggett on Tuesday, said Sue Tucker, a county spokeswoman. The players are from Rockville, Bethesda and Potomac. Thier team was the only one from the U.S. to take part in the tournament, where it finished fourth, according to Tucker.

Report: Quince Orchard Hoops, Swim and Dive Teams Score Big Wins

The boy's basketball team advanced to the 4A West region finals while the swim team set a state record in 200-yard medley relay championship.

Two of Quince Orchard High School's teams scored surprising victories, according to reports by The Gazette. The third-seeded Cougars boy's varsity basketball team upset No. 2 Churchill, 62-57, to advance to Friday evening's 4A West region finals with a berth in the state semifinals on the line against No. 1 Magruder, according to The Gazette. Not to be outdone, the school's four-man 200-yard medley relay team set a state record on its way to winning the Maryland state championship in late February, according to The Gazette. Wootton’s State Champion Golf, Soccer Teams Honored by County Council

Teams will be presented proclamations at the start of the Montgomery County Council meeting Tuesday.

Wootton High School can soon add two county proclamations to its trophy case. The Patriots' state champion soccer and golf teams will receive proclamations from the Montgomery County Council on Tuesday. Councilman Phil Andrews, D-Gaithersburg, is expected to present the honor at the start of the meeting. Wootton golfers won the state title on Oct. 24, with a score of 603, beating Urbana by 23. The soccer team became state champs after defeating Perry Hall, 3-1, at Richard Montgomery High School on Nov. 10.

Quince Orchard, Watkins Mill Football Players Commit On National Signing Day

Players from Quince Orchard and Watkins Mill high schools signed letters of intent Tuesday to continue their football careers in college.

Football players from two Gaithersburg area high schools made official their college choices Tuesday, signing national letters of intent to play football at their respective destinations. Maryland 4A division runner-up Quince Orchard had five players commit to football programs, including star linebacker Marcus Newby, who heads to Nebraska. Other Quince Orchard commitments include Kieran Gregory (Richmond), Andrew Ankrah (James Madison), Matt Choi (Monmouth) and Tyrell Williams (Georgetown), head coach Dave Mencarini said. Watkins Mill High School featured a lone commitment, Quinton Littlejohn (Stony Brook), according to head coach Kevin Watson. Gaithersburg Spring Sports Registration Opens Friday

The city offers softball, baseball, soccer, volleyball, track and field, smart start golf and t-ball programs.

The city of Gaithersburg's spring sports season is upcoming, and registration for the city's softball, baseball, soccer, volleyball, track and field, smart start golf and t-ball programs opens Friday. Registration ends March 4, but the Start Smart Programs are limited to the first 20 participants who register. Interested participants can sign their children up online through RecXpress.
