The systemwide proposal to provide more central office support to struggling schools begins with a 10-school pilot, according to county schools officials.
Three schools in Montgomery Village—Watkins Mill Elementary, Montgomery Village Middle, and Watkins Mill High—were picked to help pilot a new program from Montgomery County Public Schools that will provide an extra layer of central office support to underperforming schools. Officials culled various data to determine the schools that needed help, including key measures at certain grade levels, like whether students are reading as they should by 3rd grade and whether 5th and 8th graders have the reading and math skills that prepare them for the next level. Boy's and girl's lacrosse and softball teams from Gaithersburg area schools struggled in the first round of the state tournament.
State title dreams ended for a number of Gaithersburg area teams in the first round of their respective state tournaments. The boy's lacrosse, girl's lacrosse and softball teams from Gaithersburg, Quince Orchard and Watkins Mill high schools posted a combined 2-3 record in round one. Boy's Lacrosse No. 6 Gaithersburg High School was upset by No. 11 Thomas Johnson, 13-4. Thomas Johnson travels to Gaithersburg Friday to challenge No. 3 Quince Orchard at 7 p.m. The Cougars advanced to the regional quarterfinal with a first-round bye. Gaithersburg awarded a record 10 students with a total of $9,000 in scholarship funds through the W. Edward Bohrer, Jr. Memorial CHARACTER COUNTS! Scholarship program, the city announced Wednesday. As Maryland state lacrosse tournament games get underway Wednesday, local varsity softball teams have to wait an extra day to kick off their 2013 run to the state championship. A Watkins Mill High School student struck by a vehicle while walking to school Tuesday is expected to be released from the hospital Tuesday evening, Watkins Mill principal Scott Murphy wrote in a letter to the school community. At approximately 7:15 a.m., the student "was struck by a car as he was walking across Apple Ridge Road on the crosswalk adjacent to our school," Murphy wrote in the letter. "Medical personnel, police, school officials and the student's parent immediately responded to the scene. The student was alert and stable when paramedics arrived, and he was transported to a local hospital for further evaluation." Local athletes received recognition this week with the unveiling of some of The Gazette's 2012 All-Gazette teams. Gaithersburg-area athletes were named to the boy's soccer, girl's soccer and cross country All-Gazette teams. The narrative is the same each week: two Gaithersburg-area high schools win big while another falls in dramatic fashion.
