Gear Up For Gluttony: DC Meat Week Begins Sunday

Eight days of barbecue festivities wind through DC, MD and VA.

With the new year comes a new cycle of “weeks”: DC Restaurant Week, Bethesda Restaurant Week and now Meat Week. The fourth annual meat extravaganza begins Sunday and continues through Feb. 3, featuring the DMV’s most popular barbecue restaurants, food truck face offs and lots and lots of sweet, smoky meat. Events begin at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Rockville’s Urban Bar-B-Que, also Montgomery County’s only featured participant. For eight days festivities will wind through DC and Virginia suburbs. Founding Farmers to Release Cookbook in Fall 2013

Items will include restaurant favorites such as Southern Pan-Fried Chicken and Waffles, Devil-ish Eggs, Skillet Cornbread and Farmer Ellen’s Carrot Cake.

Come fall, area foodies will have a new cookbook to display on their shelves: Founding Farmers will release a restaurant cook book due out in October. Located in Park Potomac, MD, and Washington, DC, Founding Farmers offers a seasonal, locally-sourced menu of comfort food. Range—celebrity chef Bryan Voltaggio's newest restaurant—opened on Dec. 18 in the newly renovated Chevy Chase Pavilion. Range's menu is meat-centric, offering menu items such as potted foie gras, rabbit, scrapple, pork shanks and cheeks, beef marrow bones, veal heart, veal sweetbreads and whole roasted rabbit, "hunter style." Shellfish options include oysters, shrimp, crabs and lobster. Fish dishes include rockfish and black cod with barbecued hazelnuts. Dishes are prepared in the restaurant's open kitchen. The restaurant also makes its own breads, pizzas, pastas and candies. Pizza chef Edan MacQuaid has worked in many well-known pizza kitchens in the Washington, DC, area. Food News: Vegan Juice and a Buggy Cocktail

This week, fresh juice takes center plate: One Meat: Amy Waldman, the owner of Bethesda's Purée Artisan Juice Bar that opened about a year ago, has launched a home delivery service—and with it a vegan commercial kitchen based in Kensington, Potomac Patch reported. The home delivery service of the fresh, raw juices (useful for those going on a juice fast) required additional production space. Finding no commercial kitchen space for rent that was suitable for vegan, raw food production, Waldman opened up her own commercial kitchen. Orange Leaf Yogurt, A Wider Circle Host Pajama Fundraiser

Donate a new pair of pajamas to Montgomery County’s less fortunate residents and receive a free cup of frozen yogurt this weekend. In exchange for a donation of new pajamas to local non-profit A Wider Circle, Potomac’s Orange Leaf Yogurt will offer a free 3-ounce yogurt to customers all day Sunday.  Based in Silver Spring, A Wider Circle is a nonprofit program benefiting adults and children affected by homelessness, poverty and substance abuse in the greater-Washington DC area. First off, nobody is forcing you to eat that burger. Second, even if you want to eat that sort of thing, it's fine to eat on occasion, and not every week. Third. . . it's catering to the audience. In England, you have a good sized Indian and Pakistani population, many of whom are vegetarian. Also, there isn't a lot of land to raise beef, so it's insanely expensive there. Range's menu is meat-centric, offering menu items such as potted foie gras, rabbit, scrapple, pork shanks and cheeks, beef marrow bones, veal heart, veal sweetbreads and whole roasted rabbit, "hunter style."
