Sweet Monty was saved by a local teen from life on the streets and is looking for his new family.
Monty is a true love bug. He’s a sweet, affectionate and playful pit-mix who just wants to be loved and be part of a family. He’s a handsome boy who’s only a year old and weighs in at about 60 pounds. His body is still playing catch-up with his big, blocky head, and he has a big, warm bully smile that lights up when he sees you. Monty’s story is one that demonstrates the best and worst in people. He was found running free in an abandoned parking lot near a major highway by Lauren Bradford, a Good Samaritan and local senior at Fairfax High School. Lauren’s parents were away for the weekend, and she took it upon herself to take this sweet pup in, canvass the local neighborhoods and post filers and ads on Craigslist in hopes of finding Monty…

Meet Zen, a gentle, sweet Shar-Pei looking for his forever home.
Need a little calm canine energy in your life? Meet Zen, a laid-back and super-sweet Chinese Shar-Pei. He's about five years old and weighs in at 50 pounds. Zen is a unique and striking dog who has a very gentle way about him, and just wants to be loved and to find his new place in the world. After being purchased from an Arizona breeder, Zen was surrendered by his owner, who claimed he was working longer hours and wasn’t able to care for him. Poor Zen lived in a home with his family for over four years and then suddenly found himself abandoned in a shelter for six long months. This is, unfortunately, a story that happens to good dogs every day. Because of his sweet, calm demeanor, Zen quickly became a staff favorite at the shelter, and …

Marylanders may request that utility companies defer installing smart meters in their homes or businesses, pending a decision by the PSC on whether customers will be able to opt out of receiving the smart meters.
In a small score for those against the installation of smart meters in their homes, the Maryland Public Service Commission decided Thursday that Marylanders may request utility companies defer the installation of smart meter devices in their homes or businesses, pending a final decision by the PSC on whether customers may opt out of receiving smart meters. "The [PSC]’s order is effective immediately and affects customers in the Baltimore Gas & Electric, Potomac Electric Power Company [Pepco] and Delmarva Power service territories," according to a PSC statement. "Also, customers who already have smart meters installed, but do not wish to have one, may inform their utility in writing. The utility cannot activate those customers’ smart meter …

Rocklands Farm, located a little north of Potomac, is giving families the chance to raise a little spring cheer this year. Families can "rent" chicks to raise through spring and return them later in the year.
Updated Monday, April 16: A local farm is trying something a little different this year to get people interested in farming and supporting local agriculture. Rocklands Farm, near Darnestown, is renting its chicks. "We are running a special program this year to kick off our Spring farmer's market season," said AJ Minite, who works with the farm. "We are giving families an opportunity to borrow our baby chicks for two weeks around Easter time and then they can return them to the farm once they've grown up a bit." This is the first year the farm, just three years operational, has offered the program, but according to Minite interest is growing. One family that decided to take on the challenge has offered to share their experience with Patch…

The grocery chain on Thursday announced it would stop stocking beef product containing an additive know as "pink slime."
"Pink slime" no more -- for local Giant and Safeway stores. Giant Food, a top regional grocery chain based in Landover, on Thursday declared it would stop selling meat with a finely textured beef additive also known as "pink slime." The company is among a number of stores that have stopped carrying the product because of customer concern. Food regulators, however, say pink slime passes food safety standards. Giant on Thursday released a statement saying: "While [the U.S. Department of Agriculture] has indicated this product is safe for consumption and complies with all applicable standards for lean beef, many of our customers have voiced concern regarding Finely Textured Beef," the company said in a statement. "We value the trusted …

Montgomery County would do well to encourage and educate students about mid-level positions if it wants to continue economic success, a panel of experts told the County Council Tuesday.
Montgomery County’s focus on sending students to four-year colleges and universities may be a misguided attempt to keep jobs and workers in the county, according to a panel of economic and workforce development experts. The Montgomery County Council on Tuesday met with the panel for a discussion about the future of Montgomery County's workforce and job opportunities. Responding to the points of Economist Stephen Fuller's presentation last fall, the panel told the council that the dynamic of the nation’s economy is changing. Pushing students to four-year college and beyond may not meet the needs of the county’s future employers, while encouraging mid-level opportunities and job training would be more successful. “Forty percent of the …
