5 Useful Things to Know Today: Sept. 7

Rain, auctions and Back-to-School nights.

1. Today's weather is wet, wet, wet. 80% chance of rain on top of the rain we had yesterday. There is a flood watch along the Potomac River, so stay away from low lying areas and the C&O Canal.

2. Shady Grove Farmers' & Artisans' Market at Johns Hopkins University Montgomery County Campus is on for today form 10am to 2pm. Vendors selling everything from fruit to art. 3. Here is something worth supporting – Montgomery Alliance's  Combat2College program is having a Cookout & Auction at Smokey Glen Farm, 16407 Riffle Ford Rd, tonight at 5:30pm-8pm. Combat2College provides academic and support services for veterans as they transition from the military to academia at Montgomery College.  This evening, Gaithersburg Mayor Sidney Katz and Kensington Mayor Peter Fosselman will auction a 9-Mayors’ Cookout. $30 per person. 4. Ever wanted to try out your stepdancing chops after seeing all the Irish dancers at the Labor Day Parade? Here is a chance for you and the kids to learn some steps with a free dance class at The Duffy School of Irish Dance. Tonight at 582 N Frederick Ave, Gaithersburg, MD, 5:30pm–6:15pm. 301-518-4607

5. Tonight, there are two Back-to-School Nights in the area. Both Thurgood Marshall Elementary and Stone Mill Elementary  will hold their Back-to-school nights for the whole schools starting at 7pm . Rachel Carson Elementary will have its Back-to-school night for grades 3-5.
